The Street Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department maintains 56 miles of streets and 22 miles of alleyways throughout the city limits of Murphysboro. Its responsibilities include:

Routine Maintenance

• Repair streets
• Repair alleys
• Sweep streets
• Clean catch basins and storm sewers
• Clean ditches
• Repair/replace street signs (traffic and directional)
• Mow rights-of-way and city-owned properties
• Trim trees/bushes on city-owned properties and rights-of-ways

Periodic Maintenance

• Mosquito abatement
• Change banners
• Paint all crosswalks, parking stalls, and curbs
• Hang holiday decorations

Other

• Snow removal
• Parade detours
• Annual city cleanup
• Winter storm damage clean-up

Snow Routes

In order to maintain traffic safety and emergency access, it is unlawful to park any vehicle on any designated and marked Snow Route in the City when the National Weather Service has forecast a snowfall of 3 or more inches for the area or within 12 hours after a snowfall of 3 inches or more has occurred. Any vehicle parked in a designated snow route zone at any time prohibited as stated above shall be towed away at the owner’s expense.

The following streets and portions of streets are hereby designated as snow routes:

State Routes

• Walnut Street – in its entirety
• North 6th Street from Lucier Street to the City Limits
• State Route 13 from Walnut Street to the northern City Limits
• Business State Route 13 from Walnut Street to Bridge Street

Primary City Routes

• 22nd Street from Illinois Avenue to Division Street
• Division Street from 22nd Street to 23rd Street
• 23rd Street from Division Street to Commercial Avenue
• Commercial Avenue from 23rd to the Wastewater Treatment Plant
• Commercial Avenue from 20th Street to 23rd Street
• Shoemaker Drive from 20th Street to Bridge Street
• Bridge Street from its intersection with Shoemaker Drive to Walnut Street via 8th Street
• Illinois Avenue from 6th Street to 22nd Street
• Gartside Street from 14th Street to 22nd Street
• 20th Street from Illinois Avenue to the southern limits of the City
• 19th Street from Walnut Street to Gartside Street
• 16th Street from Walnut Street to Harry Ray Drive
• 7th Street from Lucier Street to Walnut Street

Alternate City Routes

• Spruce Street from 22nd Street to 8th Street via South and Mulberry Streets
• Pine Street from 15th Street to 22nd Street
• 7th Street from Illinois Avenue to the northern corporate limits of the City
• Industrial Park Drive from 7th Street to SR 13 and Business Highway 13
